The new book alerts in the May Christian County Library email newsletter includes some exceptional additions to the children's section. Giving credit where credit is due.

For middle school-age children is "Candle Island." The publisher's note:

"A moving portrait of loss and the restorative power of art from Lauren Wolk, the Newbery Honor-winning author of Beyond the Bright Sea. Lucretia Sanderson has a secret. Lucretia and her mother have come to tiny Candle Island, Maine (Population: Summer, 986; Winter, 315) to escape—escape memories of the car accident that killed her father and escape the journalists that hound her mother, a famous and reclusive artist. The rocky coast and ocean breeze are a welcome respite for Lucretia, who dedicates her summer days to painting, exploring the island, and caring for an orphaned osprey chick. But Candle Island has secrets of its own—a hidden room in her new house, a mysterious boy with a beautiful voice—and just like the strong tides that surround the shores, they will catch Lucretia in their wake. With an unforgettable New England setting and a complex web of relationships old and new, Candle Island is a powerful story about art, loss, and the power of being true to your own voice.…"

Next is a children's biography of Hans Christian Andersen, His Fairytale Life. The book is geared for children ages 4-8.

CCL: Ozark Children's Biography

Across languages, borders, and disciplines, his timeless creations have left a footprint beyond measuring. Now, come along back to the beginning and meet the human that came before the legend."

And then there is a biography of Pauline Baynes, the illustrator to C. S. Lewis' Narnia books, Painting Wonder: "How Pauline Baynes illustrate the worlds of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien."

CCL: Nixa Children's Biography

Geared toward children ages 6-8. From Amazon:
"Just in time for the 75th anniversary of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe comes Painting Wonder, an enchanting picture book biography about the artist whose illustrations brought the worlds of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien to life.

Young Pauline Baynes lives in India, a land of towering mountains, sparkling lakes, and bright flowers. She even has a pet monkey that joins her for tea.

Then her life takes a turn, and Pauline is sent to dreary England. Books bring light and color to her world, so she sets out to paint the stories she loves. Years later, two iconic authors see her paintings and know she’s the illustrator for their stories―of fire-breathing dragons, towering giants, a golden lion, and four brave children.

Follow Pauline into some of the most beloved and prominent landscapes in all of children’s literature: the magical lands of J.R.R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis."

Next is a book for children interested in growing things, "The Junior Plant Lovers Handbook." Reading level is for 8-12 years.
